Travelers short on time who want maximum density per kilometre. Sun Moon Lake rewards slow pace; two hours in and out by taxi doesn't justify the transit.
Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) is an alpine lake in Nantou County at 748 metres above sea level, surrounded by mountains and named for the shapes of its eastern and western sections. The Lalu Island in the centre is sacred to the Thao indigenous people, who have lived on the lake's shores for centuries. A 37km cycling path circles the lake. The Wenwu Temple on the northern shore and the Xuanguang Temple mid-lake are the main religious sites. The mid-autumn moon-viewing festival draws significant crowds.
Sun Moon Lake cycling is one of the best half-days in Taiwan's interior. The path is mostly flat, lake views are constant, and the combination of mountain backdrop, island temples, and tea plantations on the surrounding hills is coherent in a way that few natural tourist destinations manage. The Ita Thao village on the east shore — active Thao indigenous community — serves local food and runs a small night market by the waterfront.
Sun Moon Lake is straightforwardly beautiful, which is underrated as a selling point. It doesn't need mythology or superlatives — it's a high-altitude lake ringed by mountains, with a cycling path, tea plantations, and well-placed temples. The Ita Thao village serves excellent water-boiled eggs and has a small night market aimed entirely at Taiwanese domestic tourists. That's fine. The 37km cycling circuit done at morning pace, with a stop at Xuanguang Temple for the view from the water, is a reliably good day.

Sun Moon Lake is a national getaway — bus tours from across Taiwan, school trips, engagement photoshoots. Taiwanese use it the way central Europeans use mountain lakes: a reliable, beautiful reset.
What visitors miss
The boat traffic across the main lake is the tourist mode. The cycling path is how it should be seen. Most visitors do the boat tour, photograph from the main ferry terminal, and miss the reason to come.
Practical tips
Rent bikes at the Shuishe pier near the main bus terminal — NTD 200-300/day. Electric bikes are available for the occasional uphill sections.
From Taipei: HSR to Taichung (45 minutes) then Nantou Bus Company coach to Sun Moon Lake (about 90 minutes). Buses run roughly hourly.
The boat service across the lake is pleasant but not necessary if you're cycling. The Shaman Island viewpoint on the west shore is the best photography stop.
