Travelers who've already seen the photographs and expect more than a 90-minute coastal walk. Yehliu is good for what it is; it doesn't scale beyond that.
Yehliu (野柳) is a headland of sedimentary rock on the northeast coast shaped by differential erosion into formations that look computer-generated. Queen's Head (女王頭) — a pillar of sandstone worn by seawater into a profile with a long neck and distinct head — is the most photographed. Other formations include mushroom rocks, sea candles, and honeycomb weathering patterns. The geopark operates with a ticketed entrance and a 1.5km walking path along the headland.
Queen's Head is genuinely extraordinary: the combination of salt water, wind, tidal action, and differential rock hardness has produced a natural sculpture that no digital mockup would look credible. The other formations — mushroom rocks and honeycombed erosion surfaces — are worth seeing as a group. The headland setting, with views back toward Keelung, makes the walk scenic beyond the rock shapes themselves.
Yehliu is worth a detour if you're already heading up the northeast coast to Jiufen or Keelung. As a standalone destination from Taipei, the journey-to-payoff ratio requires either high geological interest or appropriate expectations. Queen's Head lives up to its photograph. The rest of the park is variable — some formations are remarkable, some require you to squint at the label to see what they represent. Schedule 90 minutes, see the whole park, and combine it with a stop at the Keelung Night Market or the Jiufen-Jinguashi route on the same day.

Yehliu is a standard school trip and family day out in northern Taiwan. It's on the northeast coast road circuit that links Keelung, Jiufen, and the coastal highway.
What visitors miss
Queen's Head gets all the attention. The second zone of the park — further from the entrance, with larger and more dramatic formations — is less crowded and more visually interesting.
Practical tips
Bus 1815 from Zhongxiao Fuxing MRT runs to Yehliu directly on weekdays. On weekends, take bus 1815 or a taxi from Keelung (30 minutes, NTD 200-300).
Entrance fee: NTD 80 for adults. Arrive at 9am to photograph Queen's Head before the tour groups arrive.
The park closes at 5pm (winter) or 6pm (summer). Check before making a late afternoon trip.
