Worth it if
Cold-weather Taipei visitors who want mountains and hot springs without a full day's travel. Autumn foliage seekers.
Skip it if
Anyone visiting in July or August. Heat defeats the purpose of both the mountains and the hot springs. Summer visits to Wulai are actively worse than staying in Taipei.
Wulai (烏來) is a mountain township 26km south of Taipei, home to the Atayal indigenous people for whom it was traditional territory. The area has hot spring hotels and bathhouses, a cableway up to a hill village, the Wulai Waterfall (80 metres, visible from the main street), and an Atayal museum. Wulai Old Street sells wild boar sausage, millet wine, and taro rice. The thermal water is sodium bicarbonate spring rather than the sulphur springs of Beitou — milder and colourless.
Wulai is the most accessible mountain hot spring from Taipei. The Atayal culture is presented more honestly here than at many indigenous tourism sites in Taiwan — the wild boar sausage is a genuine traditional food (not a tourist recreation), the museum covers Atayal history including Japanese colonial suppression policies, and the older residents are actually Atayal. The hot spring outdoor pools on the Nanshi River bank work as intended in cool mountain air.
Wulai in winter is excellent; Wulai in summer is a mistake. The hot springs are the point — specifically the outdoor shared pools on the riverbank that cost NTD 200-300 and work exactly as they should in cool mountain air. The wild boar sausage from the street stalls is worth eating. The Atayal museum deserves 45 minutes of honest attention. The waterfall is impressive. This is a one-night getaway from Taipei, not a destination — but as a one-night getaway, it works reliably.

Why locals go
Taipei residents use Wulai as a quick autumn and winter resort — autumn leaves in November, hot springs, mountain air. The 45-minute drive or bus is short enough for a day trip.
What visitors miss
The hiking trails above the falls — particularly toward the Fushan area — are wilder and less visited than the Old Street circuit.
Practical tips
Bus 849 from MRT Xindian Station to Wulai: about 50 minutes, NTD 30. Taxis from Taipei cost NTD 600-800.
The outdoor hot spring baths on the Nanshi River are pay-per-use (NTD 200-300). Bring your own towel or rent from the office. Swimwear required at public baths.
Don't come on a summer weekend — the narrow mountain roads gridlock. Weekday autumn visits are the correct formula.

Best time
October to March for hot spring season and autumn foliage. Explicitly avoid summer: the trails are hot, the springs lose their appeal, and the natural swimming spots crowd. Wulai is a cold-weather destination.
