Alishan Forest Railway

Alishan (阿里山) is a mountain area in Chiayi County at 2,000-2,600 metres elevation, reached by a narrow-gauge forest railway that rises 2,179 metres over 71km — one of the steepest gradient railways still in passenger service. Built by the Japanese colonial government to extract hinoki and red cypress, the line now carries tourists rather than timber. The sacred trees are the survivors: some over 3,000 years old. The area is famous for two seasonal spectacles — the sunrise sea-of-clouds visible in autumn and winter, and the cherry blossoms from late March to early April.

The forest railway experience itself — a century-old narrow-gauge train climbing through banana groves, bamboo forest, tropical forest, and finally into Alpine growth over 2.5 hours — is extraordinary as a journey before you arrive anywhere. The sacred cypress trees are not metaphorical: standing next to a 3,000-year-old tree that Japanese loggers chose to leave (or couldn't fell in time) is a genuine encounter with scale. The sunrise cloud sea, when conditions align, is genuinely spectacular — cloud filling the valleys below while the peaks float above.
