Skip it if
Travelers on 7-day Taiwan loops allocating one night to Kenting. The transport time from Taipei (HSR + bus: 4+ hours) means Kenting needs at least 2 nights to justify the trip.
Kenting (墾丁) is the southernmost tip of Taiwan and the country's only genuinely tropical zone, where the Pacific Ocean and the Taiwan Strait converge. The national park covers the Hengchun Peninsula, with South Bay (南灣) as the most popular beach, dozens of smaller bays accessible by scooter, and the Hengchun township night market at the park entrance. The area hosts the spring scops owl migration and is a significant hawk-watching corridor in autumn.
Taiwan has excellent mountain scenery everywhere. It has one genuinely tropical beach zone, and that's Kenting. South Bay is warm enough to swim year-round; the snorkelling has accessible coral reefs within 100 metres of the beach; and the scooter rental culture — driving the coastal loops between beaches without a fixed plan — is a specific Kenting experience that can't be replicated elsewhere in Taiwan.
Kenting is Taiwan's least-Taiwan experience: hot, beach-oriented, aimed at domestic tourists. That's not a criticism — it's accurate. The snorkelling at South Bay is good (not great), the scooter loop of the peninsula is excellent, and the Hengchun Night Market is a legitimate market rather than a tourist construction. The honest issue is access: Kenting is the furthest point from Taipei. Unless you're already in the south, it needs dedicated days. With two nights, the coastal loop, South Bay, and an afternoon at Chuhuo volcanic area gives you the best of it.

Why locals go
Kenting is Taiwan's beach holiday destination: where Taiwanese go for spring break, long weekends, and the annual Spring Scream music festival. It has a party atmosphere during peak periods and significantly quieter in the shoulder season.
What visitors miss
South Bay gets most of the traffic. Baisha Beach (白砂) on the west coast and the Chuhuo volcanic mud pools inland are quieter and more interesting.
Practical tips
From Kaohsiung, the Kenting Express Bus runs directly to South Bay and Kenting town — about 2 hours, NTD 320 each way.
Rent a scooter in Kenting town (NTD 300-500/day). The coastal loops are best on two wheels; the park is too spread out for walking.
Best snorkel for beginners: South Bay. For more advanced reef snorkelling, hire a guide to the protected reefs at Baisha or Chuanfan Rock.
