An active volcanic valley on the rim of Hakone's caldera, created by the last major eruption approximately 3,000 years ago. Sulfurous steam vents rise from bare rock and pale yellow earth; the smell of hydrogen sulfide is consistent and noticeable. The valley sits at around 1,000m on the ropeway route between Sounzan and Togendai. A ropeway gondola station with a small market and an outdoor observation path form the primary visitor area. Black eggs (kuro-tamago) — hard-boiled in the sulfuric hot springs — are sold at the station.
There is nowhere else in Japan's popular tourist circuit where you can stand in an active volcanic landscape at close range. The visual contrast — bare steaming rock against the green Hakone hills — is striking. On clear days Mount Fuji appears above the ridge to the north. The ropeway is included in the Hakone Free Pass, which most visitors hold anyway.
Budget 30–45 minutes. The steam vents and the view are the whole thing. The black eggs are worth buying once — eat one at the overlook, decide if it was worth it. Don't pre-commit to a specific price before you arrive; the stalls post it clearly.

Why locals go
The ropeway is the main cross-caldera route; locals use it to move between the lake and mountain sides of Hakone. Owakudani is a stop on the way rather than a dedicated destination for most.
What visitors miss
Some visitors skip the ropeway because of the cost. Others have read about volcanic activity closures — access to the Owakudani zone specifically has been restricted more frequently since 2015 — and decide the risk of a wasted trip isn't worth it. Check the day of.
