A five-storey pagoda on the hillside above Fujiyoshida, part of the Arakura Fujisan Sengen Shrine complex. The pagoda appears in the most reproduced photographs of Japan — the composition where Mount Fuji rises behind a pagoda surrounded by cherry blossoms. That photograph was taken from here. The shrine has stood since 788; the pagoda was dedicated in 1963. Access requires climbing 398 steps from the main torii gate.
The combination of a historic pagoda on a wooded hillside with Mount Fuji visible behind it is singular. No other viewpoint in the Fuji area produces this specific composition, and it is free. The staircase deters enough visitors that the observation platform doesn't feel completely overwhelmed. In late March and early April, cherry blossom trees on the approach make the standard photograph possible.
Go in the morning. Fuji cloud cover builds through the afternoon on most days. If you arrive after 11:00 in summer, assume the mountain won't be visible and decide whether the pagoda alone is worth the climb. It's a fine structure, but the view without Fuji is a pagoda in forest.

Fujiyoshida residents use the Arakura Sengen Shrine for festivals and regular visits. The pagoda is a landmark they navigate by, not a tourist construct they've built around.
What visitors miss
Shimoyoshida Station (Fujikyu Railway) is less instinctive from Tokyo than the Shinkansen route to Odawara or the express to Kawaguchiko. Most visitors doing "Fuji from Tokyo" go to Hakone or Lake Kawaguchiko without continuing to Fujiyoshida.
