Worth it if
Fuji-focused travelers, photographers, nature lovers, people who can stay overnight.
Skip it if
People with tight itineraries who cannot tolerate weather disappointment.
The most accessible of the Fuji Five Lakes, 90 minutes from Tokyo by bus, where the northern shore gives a direct sightline to Mount Fuji on clear days. The lakeside has guesthouses, walking paths, small museums, and the Chureito Pagoda above Fujiyoshida — the most photographed Fuji composition in Japan.
If Mount Fuji matters to you, this is where you actually see it rather than hope to see it from a bullet train window. The northern lakeside view, reflected in still water at dawn, makes sense of why the mountain carries what it carries in Japanese culture. You might get that view. You might get cloud. Staying overnight significantly improves the odds.
Fuji is covered in cloud on the majority of days. This is not a minor caveat. It is the baseline condition. The mountain generates its own weather system and cloud builds from mid-morning even when the early forecast looks clear. If you are coming specifically to see the mountain, check the early-morning forecast for your exact day and plan nothing else until you know. Arrive before 9am. The autumn foliage around the lake is reliable and does not require a clear sky. Know before you go what you will do if the mountain does not appear, because it may not.

Why locals go
Kawaguchiko and the surrounding Fuji Five Lakes area has good seasonal appeal beyond the mountain: autumn foliage is among the most striking in the Kanto region, and winter visits occasionally produce the rare combination of clear Fuji views and snowfall.
What visitors miss
They underestimate the cloud variable and plan for one clear day. Multiple day-trippers from Tokyo arrive, find cloud, and leave. A two-night stay gives multiple dawn and dusk opportunities.

Practical tips
Stay overnight if the Fuji view is your primary reason for going. Day trips are cloud-dependent gambles.
The Chureito Pagoda requires climbing 400 stone steps from Fujiyoshida station. Leave 40 minutes for the ascent. Most people take the cable car instead — the pagoda view is better.
Check JMA forecasts (Japan Meteorological Agency) rather than general weather apps for more reliable Fuji visibility predictions.
