Worth it if
Art-curious travelers. Families (there is a substantial children's play area). Anyone in Hakone for more than one night who wants depth beyond onsen and lake views.
Skip it if
Travelers doing Hakone in a single rushed day focused only on the ropeway and Lake Ashi. People with no interest in sculpture or outdoor art.
Japan's first open-air sculpture museum (1969), covering 70,000 square metres of hillside grounds in the Hakone highlands. Permanent collection includes works by Picasso, Henry Moore, Rodin, Bourdelle, and over 100 others. Five indoor gallery pavilions including a dedicated Picasso Gallery (300+ works). Fuji is visible on clear days from the grounds.
Most Hakone itineraries focus on the ropeway, Lake Ashi, and an onsen stay. The Open-Air Museum is consistently the highest-rated Hakone attraction among visitors who go, and it is frequently missed by people who plan only the standard Hakone loop.
Better than the standard Hakone itinerary gives it credit for. If you have a second day in Hakone, make it a morning anchor.

Why locals go
The grounds are large enough that even a busy day feels navigable. The combination of sculpture, mountain scenery, and covered indoor galleries makes it one of the more weather-resilient Hakone options.
What visitors miss
The name sounds like a secondary attraction. It is not. Budget 2–3 hours and treat it as a primary stop.

Best time
Morning, when light on the outdoor sculptures is best. The museum is open year-round including the New Year period. Rain affects the outdoor portions but the indoor galleries and the Picasso Gallery remain fully accessible.
