Kaohsiung (高雄) is Taiwan's second-largest city and primary port, built around an expansive harbor. The city has an industrial history — petrochemicals, steel, shipping — and was largely overlooked by travellers for decades. A substantial urban renewal programme in the past 15 years has transformed the harbor waterfront, the old sugar industry warehouses (now Pier-2 Arts Centre, 駁二藝術特區), and the Love River corridor. The Formosa Boulevard MRT station has the world's largest stained glass installation.
Pier-2 Arts Centre is the most interesting arts precinct in southern Taiwan: converted industrial warehouses, street art, independent galleries, weekend markets, and an atmosphere that feels less curated than Taipei's design districts. Lotus Pond (蓮池潭) with its Dragon and Tiger Pagodas is kitsch and magnificent simultaneously — two enormous painted towers rising from the lake, entered through the dragon's mouth and exited through the tiger's tail. The Formosa Boulevard dome is worth 20 minutes specifically for the scale of the art.
Kaohsiung is better than its reputation and worse than its boosters claim. Pier-2 is genuinely good: industrial spaces converted to gallery and event use, still a little rough-edged, more interesting than anything in Taipei's polished design districts. The Dragon and Tiger Pagodas are remarkable examples of how Taiwan's religious architecture can be simultaneously devotional and maximally strange — walk in through the dragon's mouth, view the Buddhist and folk murals, walk out through the tiger's tail without irony. The Formosa Boulevard dome deserves 20 minutes. Combine those three and you have a Kaohsiung worth visiting.

Kaohsiung residents have specific civic pride about not being Taipei — more relaxed, more tropical, more industrial in character. The slower pace and proximity to Kenting make it a popular choice for Taiwanese who want urban life without northern density.
What visitors miss
The Cijin Island ferry (5 minutes from the ferry terminal, NTD 23 each way) and the Cijin seafood street are the best easy add-on in the area, and most itineraries skip them.
Practical tips
The HSR stops at Zuoying Station, 20-30 minutes from the city centre. The MRT Red Line runs from Zuoying directly into the centre.
Pier-2 has multiple warehouse zones spread over 1km of waterfront. Weekends have markets and performances; weekdays are quieter but all galleries are open.
The Cijin ferry from Gushan ferry terminal runs every 15 minutes, NTD 23 each way. Cijin Island's seafood street and lighthouse are worth 2 hours.

Best time
October to April. Kaohsiung summers are hotter than Taipei and drier — it doesn't cool down much at night. The city is at its best in cooler months when outdoor dining and waterfront walking are comfortable.
