Visitors looking for a specific sight rather than a neighbourhood. Yongkang Street doesn't have an attraction — it has an atmosphere and some excellent food.
Da'an is the most liveable district in Taipei — wide streets, Da'an Forest Park, and a concentration of good food and cafés that comes with a large student and professional population. At its centre is Yongkang Street, a 400-metre stretch of restaurants, tea houses, and indie shops. The area holds Taipei's most-argued-about beef noodle bowl — Yongkang Beef Noodles (永康牛肉麵) — and the high-altitude café culture that defines how Taipei's educated class spends its afternoons.
Yongkang Street gives you Taipei at its most comfortable: a street that educated residents eat on, not a street that performs for visitors. The beef noodles at Yongkang Beef Noodles are worth the queue — hand-made wide noodles in an intensely flavoured clear broth with braised beef shank. Beyond that, the area rewards wandering: the Shida Night Market two blocks west is genuinely better for eating than tourist-facing Shilin.
Beef noodles are Taiwan's most-argued dish and Yongkang Beef Noodles is the most-argued restaurant. The argument is worth having. The braised beef version — slow-cooked shank, clear broth, wide noodles — is the reference standard for the dish in Taipei. The queue is 20-40 minutes and worth it. After eating, walk west through the residential Da'an streets toward the park. Taipei at its most ordinary — scooters on the pavement, old men on folding chairs, a breakfast shop still serving at 4pm — turns out to be one of the more genuinely pleasant urban environments in Asia.

Da'an Forest Park is where people run, practise tai chi, and bring dogs on weekday mornings. The café concentration means Taipei professionals spend their laptop afternoons here. It's residential without being dull.
What visitors miss
Shida Night Market, two blocks west of Yongkang Street, is less famous than Shilin but serves better food at better prices. Most visitors miss it because it's less photogenic.
Practical tips
MRT Dongmen Station (R08/G08) — Exit 2 puts you on the street within two minutes.
Yongkang Beef Noodles is at 17 Jinhua Street. The braised beef clear broth version is the correct order. Cash only.
Ice Monster (冰館) on Yongkang serves the mango shaved ice that has its own queue — reasonable at about NTD 300. Best in mango season (May-September).
