A Rinzai Zen temple in Arashiyama, Kyoto, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site and the head temple of the Tenryu-ji school of Zen Buddhism. The primary draw is the Sogenchi Garden — a 14th-century landscape garden attributed to Musō Soseki, designed around a central pond with the Arashiyama hills as borrowed scenery. The garden is considered one of the oldest surviving examples of Japanese landscape garden design. The main hall (Dharma Hall) has a ceiling painting of a dragon by Kayama Matazo.
The Sogenchi Garden is one of the few places in Kyoto where the 14th-century spatial logic remains visible: the pond positioned to reflect the hills, the dry garden elements calibrated for movement through seasons. It rewards more than a quick pass-through. The temple also provides a direct exit to the bamboo grove via the north gate, making it possible to see both without backtracking.
The garden is better than the bamboo grove. The grove is a narrow corridor that takes 10 minutes with a thousand people pressing through. The Tenryu-ji garden requires more effort of attention but rewards it.

Arashiyama has deteriorated into heavy tourist traffic, but Tenryu-ji's paid garden creates a natural filter. Local visitors come for the temple specifically rather than the surrounding street scene.
What visitors miss
Most visitors treat Tenryu-ji as the entrance to the bamboo grove — they see it from outside or pay the admission and rush through. The garden requires more than 15 minutes to read correctly.

8:30 opening on weekday mornings, before the bamboo grove crowds arrive. Autumn colour (mid-November) is exceptional but crowded. Spring (late March–early April) brings cherry blossoms. The garden is worth visiting in any season.
