Skip it if
People on a return trip to Kyoto who have already seen it. Travelers with a single tight day who have also committed to Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama — three major sites in one day degrades all three.
A Zen Buddhist temple in northwest Kyoto whose upper floors are covered in gold leaf, set over a reflection pond. Built as a shogun's villa in 1397 and converted to a temple after his death. The current structure is a 1955 reconstruction — the original burned in 1950, an act that Mishima later turned into a novel.
The pavilion reflected in the pond is one of those images that earns its reputation in person. Go once, go early, and calibrate expectations: this is a 30–45 minute visit along a one-way path, not a long day.
The golden pavilion is genuinely striking on first sight. The visit is short. Both of those things are true, and accepting both makes it worthwhile.

Arrive at opening (9:00) or very close to it. Autumn foliage in mid-November frames the pavilion well. Early winter with snow is occasionally extraordinary but cannot be planned for.
