Kanazawa's central fresh-food market, operating continuously since the 18th century. About 170 shops cover the covered arcade, selling fish, shellfish, vegetables, tofu, pickles, and prepared foods. The fish selection — fed by Sea of Japan access — includes snow crab, yellowtail, flat clam, and sea bream in varieties rarely seen in Pacific-coast markets. Counter stalls inside the arcade serve sashimi sets and rice bowls for lunch.
The seafood is the reason. Kanazawa's access to cold Sea of Japan water produces crab and yellowtail (buri) of a quality that doesn't usually reach Tokyo's markets until it's been a day in transit. The covered arcade is functional and slightly chaotic in a way that feels real — it's not a food hall designed for visitors. A sashimi counter lunch costs roughly what a bowl of ramen costs elsewhere.
Don't research specific stalls in advance — they change, close, and rotate staff. Walk in, find something that looks fresh and has a price you can read, and eat it there. That approach works better than any curated list.

It's where locals buy their fish. The best stalls have regulars who've been coming for decades. Morning prices differ from lunchtime prices, and morning fish differs from afternoon fish.
What visitors miss
The covered arcade is disorienting — the layout isn't linear, signage is mostly in Japanese, and some stalls close by early afternoon. Guided food tours pass through but move fast.
