A circular, glass-walled contemporary art museum in central Kanazawa, designed by SANAA (Sejima and Nishizawa) and opened in 2004. The building has no front — four equal entrances, a flat roofline, and perimeter galleries visible from outside. Leandro Erlich's Swimming Pool — a shallow tank of water with a glass floor that creates the illusion of depth from above and submersion from below — is the permanent signature installation.
The architecture earns a visit independent of whatever is showing. The circular plan dissolves interior and exterior through glass walls; the light from skylights is consistent and calibrated. The Swimming Pool is one of the most genuinely surprising contemporary art installations in Japan. The free zone — accessible every day including Monday — has civic presence that most museum public spaces don't.
The Swimming Pool is genuinely good — one of the few contemporary art installations that earns its reputation without needing to be explained. The rest of the collection is uneven, but the building itself justifies the visit.

Why locals go
The free zone is used as a shortcut, a lunch spot, and a place to meet. The museum is integrated into daily city life rather than set apart from it, which is partly the SANAA brief and partly what happened after it opened.
What visitors miss
Visitors focused on Kenrokuen and Higashi Chaya often run out of time. The building reads as modest from the outside — it doesn't announce itself as a major cultural institution.
