People who do not enjoy gardens or are rushing Nara as a half-day stop.
A traditional Japanese garden near Todai-ji that uses Wakakusayama mountain as borrowed scenery — the garden's composition extends beyond its own walls to incorporate the mountain behind it. Two separate garden areas from different periods, quiet paths, tea house, and a calm that's notably absent from the deer park 10 minutes away.
Nara fills up quickly: temple, deer, photos, back on the train. Isuien adds a different texture to the day. The borrowed scenery technique — where the garden's visual composition includes landscape beyond its boundaries — means the space feels larger and more considered than a walled garden usually does.
The standard Nara day — bullet train from Kyoto, deer photos, Todai-ji, bullet train back — is one of the least interesting ways to spend a day in the Kansai region. Nara was Japan's capital for nearly a century. The park is a fraction of what the city actually is. Naramachi, the old merchant district south of the park, and the hills behind the Kasuga Shrine are why it matters historically. Most people see none of it. If you are treating Nara as a deer photo stop, you are getting about 15 percent of the place.

Why locals go
The borrowed scenery composition — the mountain becoming part of the garden view — is genuinely sophisticated and easy to miss if you don't know to look for it. The tea house interior and the seasonal planting are also worth time.
What visitors miss
Most day-trippers spend all their time at Todai-ji and the deer park, then head straight back to the station. The quieter eastern part of Nara Park — Isuien, Kasugayama Primeval Forest, Kasuga Grand Shrine — doesn't make most itineraries.

Practical tips
Pair directly with Todai-ji — they're a 5-minute walk apart.
Check opening hours before going — it has irregular closure days.
The combination ticket for both garden areas is worth it. The second area (facing the different mountain view) is often the better one.
