Worth it if
Anyone in Nara for more than a 2-hour visit. Travelers who appreciate atmospheric shrine settings over manicured tourist attractions.
Skip it if
People doing a rushed 90-minute Nara stop focused only on the Great Buddha.
Nara's most important Shinto shrine, established 768 CE, set within Kasugayama Primeval Forest (UNESCO World Heritage). The approach from Nara Park passes stone lanterns lining a shaded forest path alongside deer. The shrine complex holds more than 3,000 bronze and stone lanterns. Twice a year — during Setsubun (February 3) and Obon (August 14–15) — all lanterns are lit simultaneously.
The forested lantern approach is one of Japan's more atmospheric shrine walks and requires no effort beyond walking 20 minutes through Nara Park from Todai-ji. Most Nara visitors stop at the Great Buddha and deer and miss the best part of a longer visit.
The natural extension of a Nara day that most visitors don't take. The forested lantern path is worth 20 minutes of walking even if you don't pay to enter the inner precinct.

Why locals go
Kasugayama Primeval Forest (175+ tree species, designated as protected) makes the approach unusual among shrine visits — it feels genuinely ancient rather than manicured.
What visitors miss
They plan for Todai-ji, experience the deer, and leave. Kasuga Taisha is 20 minutes further by foot through the park and rewards the extension.
