Taipei 101 is a 508-metre supertall skyscraper in the Xinyi district, completed in 2004, world's tallest building from 2004-2010. The pagoda-inspired design references Chinese architecture through its bamboo-segment structure. The 89th floor observatory is the main visitor destination. The 87th-88th floors house the world's largest visible tuned mass damper (TMD) — a 660-tonne steel sphere suspended from the 92nd floor by cables, which sways up to 1.5 metres to counteract building oscillation in typhoons and earthquakes.
The 660-tonne damper ball is worth seeing — not for the view, but because it's a piece of engineering that makes a specific claim and delivers on it. The sphere of 41 steel discs, suspended from above, represents the reason the building doesn't sway dangerously in Taiwan's frequent typhoons and earthquakes. The fact that it's visible and explained rather than hidden is the design decision that makes the observatory worth visiting. The view from the 89th floor on a clear day also gives the full breadth of the Taipei basin.
Taipei 101 is the obligation that's worth fulfilling once. The damper saves the observatory from being purely a viewpoint: it gives you something specific to see, something to understand, and an encounter with engineering at a scale that's difficult to appreciate from ground level. The building's pagoda silhouette, which looks slightly strange from street level, makes more sense from above when the proportions resolve. Do it once at dusk. Don't go back.

What visitors miss
Floor 91 is an outdoor viewing deck with better angles than floor 89 — fewer barriers, more open sky. Most visitors don't know it exists.

MRT to Taipei 101/World Trade Center Station (R03/BL18) — the building is visible from the exit. Book tickets online (taipeiobservatory.com.tw) to skip the entrance queue.
Floor 91 outdoor deck requires separate stairs from the main 89th floor observatory — ask staff for access. Worth the effort for the open air.
Combine with the Xinyi shopping district below — the pedestrian links between Taipei 101, ATT 4 Fun, and Eslite Spectrum make a natural evening circuit.
