Day-trippers from Taipei doing Taroko in a single day. If you're coming just for the gorge and going back the same evening, Hualien City doesn't have time to show you what it is.
Hualien is a small city of 100,000 on Taiwan's east coast, backed by the Central Mountain Range and fronted by the Pacific Ocean. Most visitors come for Taroko Gorge — but Hualien itself is worth a day: the morning fish market, the scallion pancake (蔥油餅) breakfast culture, a beachside cycling path along the Pacific, and the distinct personality of a city geographically isolated from western Taiwan by mountains. Hualien has the highest Amis indigenous population of any Taiwanese city, which shows in the market produce, food stalls, and local shops.
The Hualien morning market is the best version of a Taiwanese wet market: live fish tanks, mountain vegetables, mochi stalls, and the scallion pancake breakfasts Hualien is famed for. The city has a slower rhythm than Taipei — no MRT, fewer tourists in the streets, the ocean visible from elevated points. The coastal cycling path along County Road 193, which runs between the mountains and the Pacific, is one of Taiwan's best cycling routes.
Hualien is the sleep-past-the-alarm version of Taiwan: unhurried, unpretentious, good at specific things. The best single hour is the morning market at dawn — fish traders and mountain vegetable sellers mid-transaction, the rest of the city still quiet. The worst single decision is doing Hualien and Taroko in the same day from Taipei and thinking you've seen either one.

Hualien is where people from the rest of Taiwan go when they want the east coast. The Amis night market and the morning market represent a food culture that's specifically Hualien, not Taipei-exported.
What visitors miss
Most visitors use Hualien purely as a Taroko staging post. The city itself — the market, the scallion pancakes, the coastal path — gets skipped in favour of the famous site.
Practical tips
Scallion pancake stalls cluster near Hualien Train Station. A'zong Scallion Pancake (阿宗蔥油餅) on Zhonghua Road is the reference address. Open 6am-noon only.
Coastal cycling path from Hualien Harbor to Qixingtan Beach is 10km and flat — rent a bike from the hostel district near the station (NTD 200/day).
Book trains back to Taipei 2-3 weeks in advance. Return Taroko Express and Puyuma seats sell out faster than outbound.
