The retail and food area that remained in Tsukiji when the wholesale fish market moved to Toyosu in October 2018. Approximately 300 stalls and shops — seafood, tamagoyaki (sweet egg omelette), street food, market knives, and preserved goods. The stalls are privately owned and operated independently; there is no central management.
It is one of the best breakfast and early-morning food experiences in Tokyo. Oysters, tuna cuts, tamagoyaki, fresh sashimi on rice, grilled seafood — all eaten standing at stalls by 8am. The market atmosphere is real even if the wholesale character is gone.
Worth a morning. It's no longer a wholesale fish market, but it's still a working food market with good things to eat. Go early, graze, and don't try to make it into a longer event.

Why locals go
Professional chefs still source knives from Tsukiji — the specialist knife shops carry quality and range that most retail stores don't stock, and the vendors know how to match a blade to a use. Home cooks come for dried goods, seaweed, and bonito in grades and quantities that supermarkets don't carry. The market's value to locals is practical rather than scenic: a working procurement stop, not a breakfast destination.
What visitors miss
Two common errors: arriving after 10am when it gets crowded and some stalls have closed, and expecting the wholesale experience that no longer exists here. The market is now primarily food retail and street eating — calibrate for that.

Most stalls: approximately 5:00–14:00. Individual schedules vary. Many vendors closed Sundays and some Wednesdays — verify at tsukiji.or.jp before visiting.
