Tokyo National Museum (TNM) is Japan's oldest museum, founded 1872, with approximately 120,000 objects — the largest collection of Japanese art in Japan. The main Honkan building holds the permanent Japanese art collection. Ueno Park surrounds the museum cluster, which includes the National Museum of Western Art (UNESCO World Heritage, Le Corbusier building) and the National Museum of Nature and Science. The park itself is one of Tokyo's main cherry blossom sites and is also home to Shinobazu Pond and Ueno Zoo.
TNM is world-class and consistently less crowded than its equivalents in other countries. The permanent collection covers Japanese art from the Jomon period to the early 20th century. Ueno Park in cherry blossom season (late March to early April) is one of Tokyo's most complete seasonal experiences.
TNM is one of the most overlooked major institutions in Japan for tourists. The permanent collection is substantial and usually accessible without queues. Worth at least 2 hours; a good day-long option if museums are your interest.

Ueno Park functions as a genuine public space — hanami picnics during blossom season, museum visits, the zoo, Shinobazu Pond. It is one of the few places in central Tokyo with enough space to slow down.
What visitors miss
Most visitors conflate Ueno with the Ameyoko market street (which is a ground-level food and shopping experience) and miss the museum cluster entirely. TNM in particular is walked past rather than entered.
