A 500-metre pedestrian alley running parallel to the Kamo River in central Kyoto, lined with restaurants and bars. Active mostly in the evening. In summer (May–September), some restaurants extend riverside platforms (yuka) over the water. It is one of Kyoto's main evening dining areas, alongside Gion.
Pontocho is where you eat in Kyoto. Unlike Gion, which rewards a walk but can be a frustrating evening experience if you just want dinner, Pontocho is oriented around sitting down and eating well. The narrow alley and river proximity give it a quality that doesn't require careful planning to appreciate.
Pontocho is best treated as a restaurant district, not an attraction. Walk the alley, pick somewhere that looks right, and eat. The food and atmosphere do the rest.

The alleys behind the main Pontocho strip — toward the river side and the parallel lanes — have the better, less touristy spots. Locals know where the reasonable prices are; tourists usually don't stray far enough to find them.
What visitors miss
They walk through it without eating, treating it as a sightseeing stop. The experience is dining, not sightseeing.
