Tokyo's electronics and otaku district, built around several blocks near Akihabara Station. The character has shifted significantly over three decades: once primarily consumer electronics retail, now dominated by anime merchandise, gaming, figures, retro game shops, and arcades. Major electronics still exist (Yodobashi Camera Akiba is one of Japan's largest). Maid cafes are concentrated here.

For anime, manga, gaming, and figure-collecting enthusiasts, Akihabara is a serious destination and potentially the trip highlight. For curious first-timers, one hour is enough to understand what the place is. Beyond that, you need a specific reason to be there.
